LGBT News Roundup

Greetings. It’s been a while, but I’m back from winter vacation and getting myself geared up for another semester here at Metro DC PFLAG. I apologize for the long break between posts.

As you all know, DADT has been repealed (rendering the last blog post obsolete, thankfully!). While the policy itself can’t be turned off with the flick of a switch, the Pentagon has started its plan for repeal.

In the Virginia State Legislature, two delegates have introduced two anti-bullying bills, and they include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes. Who knows if they’ll pass, but hey it’s a start!

The Department of Education, in December, sent out a letter and example anti-bullying policies to state and local officials, policy makers, and educators, which includes…enumerated bullying policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity!

Meanwhile, at Metro DC PFLAG, we continue to train our staff and interested volunteers on homophobic bullying. Stay tuned.
