The Metro DC Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) announces a celebration gathering at Nellie’s Sports Bar in Washington, DC on October 11th, in honor of National Coming Out Day. And in recognition of the work of PFLAG, Nellies will be donating a portion of the bar proceeds that night to the local chapter.
“Overcoming obstacles in life is a great reason to celebrate,” said Bill Briggs, executive director of the Metro DC Chapter of PFLAG. “In the life of a lesbian or gay man, there is no bigger obstacle than the coming out process. At PFLAG, we feel it’s important to not only provide the support and encouragement that helps LGBT people live openly and honestly, but to celebrate the achievement as well.”
First celebrated in 1988, National Coming Out Day is an internationally observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people. The date of October 11 was chosen because it was the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
The members of PFLAG hope that not just the LGBT community will turn out to join in the celebration, but also parents, families, and friends. This event is designed for the entire community to celebrate their achievements, to strengthen bonds, and support others in the coming out process.
“At PFLAG, we are keenly aware that the ‘coming out’ process is one that the entire family goes through,” Briggs said. “Parents of a gay son or lesbian daughter also go through a period of soul searching, of education, and ultimately acceptance. We see that struggle in our support groups every day. We also see the joy when family bonds are strengthened and love wins out over fear or rejection. That’s worth celebrating.”
As part of the celebration, Nellie’s will hold their traditional Tuesday night Drag Bingo festivities, and will donate $1 to PFLAG for every Nellie beer sold that night. Coming out stories will be featured through the evening, and special recognition will go to the oldest and youngest to come out, and the person with most creative way they came out. Members of the PFLAG staff and board of directors will be in attendance to share in the celebration and thank the community for their support.
Please join Metro DC PFLAG at Nellie’s Sports Bar, U Street NW, anytime from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and help us celebrate the joy of living and loving openly and honestly. Happy Coming Out Day!
