Maryland’s Six PFLAG Chapters Applaud
The Maryland State Senate For The Introduction Of
The Fairness For All Marylanders Act
The six chapters of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in Maryland—Howard County, Baltimore County, Frederick County, Chestertown, Carroll County and Washington, DC/Metro Area—came out in strong support of the Fairness For All Marylanders Act, which would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression in the State of Maryland.
Introduced by Senator Rich Madaleno and Senator Jamie Raskin on January 29, this bold step by the Maryland State Senate introduces a desperately needed piece of legislation to help in the fight against discrimination.
With 23 co-sponsors, the most of any similar legislation in previous years, the local PFLAG chapters are confident that the Maryland State Senate will move swiftly and proactively in the passage of this important and vital legislation.
“Maryland needs to act quickly to ensure that all of its citizens are treated fairly and equally. The Constitution states “for all” and so our laws should reflect that plurality” says Frederick County PFLAG
June Horner, Carroll County PFLAG: “Every single person in our state deserves an equal opportunity to live a life which is free from discrimination.”
PFLAG Baltimore County “supports the effort to bring All of Maryland in line with 16 other states and the metropolitan counties in the Baltimore/DC corridor that have passed anti-discrimination laws.”
“We applaud the bipartisan effort in the Senate to pass this far-overdue piece of legislation,” said PFLAG Howard County President Matt Thorn, “And we are committed to assisting in the efforts for its passage. Just as the transgender community has stood by the gay and lesbian people in the fight for marriage equality, it is crucial that the LGB and straight ally community now stand unwavering with our transgender and gender non-conforming loved ones and friends in the fight against discrimination, including the passage of comprehensive non-discrimination laws”
Debbie Strauss, a member of PFLAG Metro DC Area and the mother of an adult transgender daughter agrees: “We must support all of our children. My daughter should have the same right as everyone else to live free from discrimination. Our laws should help to reduce obstacles to acceptance.”
